From Martin Holsinger:
Brigadistas is a sweet memoir of a day in the life of Sam Kerson in Nicaragua in the late `80's, when the Sandinista revolution was still young and fairly uncorrupted. Sam literally takes us from waking to sleeping, and gives his readers a wonderful feel for what it was like to live in that poor but hopeful country. Brigadistas helped me recall how hopeful and upbeat I felt about the possibility of creating a better world in those days--and reclaim some of my youthful enthusiasm. The struggle that looms in the background of Brigadistas is still going on, and it's refreshing to realize that keeping the flame of freedom and justice alive through all these years is a form of victory. If you were an activist in the 80's, it will help you get back in touch with your youthful self, and, if you have come of age since the 1980's, it will give you a sense of the historical roots of the current counterculture/new paradigm movement.

Dear Sam, Brigadistas arrived today and I read right through it. What wonderful memories it stirred and what an eye for detail you had that I never paid enough attention to. You enhanced my memories of the experience greatly.
And Dulio...dear wonderful and exasperating Dulio. I had such dreams on his behalf, You captured him at his best, and I love having your image to add to mine. He's got the charisma, vocal and dancing abilities to front a great band. I haven't seen him for a few years - maybe 5, maybe more.
Your characterization of David Lillie was wonderful as well. He has married an Irish woman and moved to be with her in a house they have built and renovated south of Dublin. He returns here every year or so as he has kids in the area. He would love this book, so I am sending you some money to send him one.
Thanks for triggering a full-on nostalgia evening around here!
